Together We Are The Light

During the darkest of times, we seek out light as a sign of hope and to give us direction. This year, we find ourselves continuing on a path of healing and recovery while also acknowledging our loss, frustration and sadness. Finding light within ourselves helps us, but it is not always easy to see. When we come together and support one another, a spark emerges, and the light can begin to shine again. Together, we are the light that will lead us through the darkness.

The Art Therapy Project is honored to share with you the artwork of clients who have come together in their groups to express their thoughts and feelings in their art process, and to support one another in finding strength, hope and resiliency through these difficult times. The light in the dark.

The United 13 Colonies of the American Revolution

by Joseph Kosinsky, acrylic on canvas

The Betsy Ross flag unified the 13 Colonies during the American Revolution.

Why thirteen stars? Flag Resolution of June 14, 1777 - stated: "Resolved: that the flag of the United States be made of thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation."

Flags give us a unified purpose and commitment. Symbols on a flag signify and indicate a common cause. The stars on our flag represent the heavenly light which gives us inspiration and direction. One star for each of the colonies on a unified blue field gives us the symbolism to follow, respect and collectively pledge allegiance.

My inspiration led me to create the maps of those original 13 colonies over the Betsy Ross flags. I was determined to complete this as an art project instead of just replicating one Betsy Ross flag. In addition, I made shadow box frames for these paintings and mounted all paintings on a wall in my home.

"Oh, say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave, O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?"
